Death of Mr Roland H. Kelsey

Mr Roland H. Kelsey, who died in a private hospital yesterday in his 69th year, after an illness lasting many months, was a prominent figure both in the journalistic and the sporting world in this state and in Western Australia. He was a member of the first South Australian tennis team which pioneered competitive tennis between the two states. Other members of the side were Mr John R. Baker, the late Mr Robert G. Bowen and the late Mr Herbert Penfold Hyland.

Shortly afterwards, Mr Kelsey went to Western Australia where he was engaged in journalistic and Hansard work for many years, and was secretary to Mr Dorham Doolette, when he later discovered the famous Bullfinch goldmine. He fought in the Great War, after which he returned to this state and joined the staff of the Register. He became associated with The Advertiser, with which he had begun journalism when a young man when the two papers amalgamated.

He played tennis and golf until only a year or so before his death, and was recognised in the former sport as one of Australia’s best all-rounders.
