About

[Robert Rolland] completed his law degree at Melbourne University in 1910 and was admitted to practice law in August 1911. He enlisted in September 1916 and left Melbourne in October 1916 as part of the 58th Battalion. On board ship he contracted mumps and was hospitalised on his arrival in England.

He arrived in France in January 1917 and was made a 2nd lieutenant with the 60th Battalion. Later he was appointed to the 15th Infantry Brigade Headquarters. In this capacity he would have seen action at Ypres, Menin Road and Polygon Wood. Rolland's war ended prematurely late in 1917 when he was injured in a tobogganing accident breaking his left leg. He was hospitalised in London and then on a medical board recommendation sent home to Australia in 1918, his appointment was terminated in April 1918.

After the War he married and moved to Sale, in East Gippsland [Victoria], forming a partnership, Rice and Rolland. For the next 40 years he maintained a legal practice in Sale, later as a sole practitioner. He took an active part in Sale local politics serving as a councillor on a number of occasions.
