From The Auckland Star, 19 September 1935:

Manager to retire – Bank of Australasia – Business and Sport Career

Well known throughout New Zealand both in business and in sporting circles, Mr Robert N.K. Swanston, manager of the Bank of Australasia in Auckland, will retire from that position at the beginning of next month after 43 years’ service with the bank. His successor is to be Mr G.A. Williamson, formerly assistant manager at Melbourne and lately acting-manager of the Sydney branch, who has already arrived in Auckland.

Mr Swanston’s connection with New Zealand began in 1905, when he was sent from Melbourne as an inspector. In this capacity he became known in practically every part of the Dominion. At different times he served as accountant in the inspector’s office and the Wellington branch, and for some time was in charge at Wellington and Christchurch. Later he returned to Australia as an inspector in Victoria and Tasmania, and afterwards was appointed manager at Auckland, a position he has held for nine years.

In the sporting world, Mr Swanston is remembered as New Zealand lawn tennis singles champion in 1912, and doubles champion with Harold A. Parker in 1905. He was many times singles and doubles champion of Wellington, and was president of the Lawn Tennis Association in 1932. After his retirement, Mr Swanston intends to remain in Auckland.
