John Horan was one of the nine children born to Thomas Patrick Horan, a native of County Cork, Ireland, and Catherine Louise Horan (née Pennefeather), who married each other in Melbourne in May 1879. Thomas Horan played first-class cricket for both Victoria and Australia, and later became a distinguished cricket journalist; he wrote under the pen name of Felix. Two of John Horan’s siblings also played first-class cricket.
