Tennis player killed

News has been received that Captain Frederick B. Stanton was killed in France on April 11. He was a son of Captain William F. Stanton, of Kooyong Road, Caulfield, a former resident of Stawell.

Captain Frederick B. Stanton enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force early in 1915. He went through the School of Instruction, and left Australia on his 22nd birthday, as a second lieutenant in the 14th Battalion. He was with the troops on Gallipoli for six weeks before the evacuation. From there he went to Egypt, where he was promoted lieutenant, and for 12 months he had been in France, where he went through some of the hardest lighting in which the Australians were engaged, and was promoted captain.

Two days before his death he sent a cable message to his relatives saying that he was well. Captain Stanton was a promising lawn tennis player, and had been a member of the Malvern and Saint Kilda first grade teams. His brother, Lieutenant Eric Stanton, a well-known member of the Banks Rowing Club, was severely wounded recently, and has just resumed duty in England. The two brothers were employed in the State Savings Bank.
