Death of Mr Louis A. Whyte

The news of the death of Mr Louis A. Whyte, of The Heights, Newtown, was received with feelings of regret yesterday. Mr Whyte had for some time been suffering from neurasthenia, and it had been remarked that he was frequently depressed. At seven o’clock yesterday morning his wife knocked at the door of his room. Getting no response, she tried the handle, and found that the key had been turned.

She called her son, who saw that the window of the room was also locked. He succeeded, however, in gaining entrance, and discovered his father lying on his back, quite dead. There was a wound in his head, and tightly clasped in his right hand was a revolver. Dr McCallum was called in, but could only pronounce life extinct. The coroner was notified, and it was ordered that an inquiry be held at 9 a.m. today.

The deceased, who was 59 years of age, was a son of Mr Charles James Whyte [and Mrs Emma Whyte (née Dowsett)]. In his younger days he took a prominent part in various departments of sport, and gained the Australian golf and tennis championships. He took part in several inter-colonial tennis matches; and was a member of the Old Geelong Collegians’ Association, filling at one time the position of vice-president. He recently gave a large donation towards the Norman Morrison Memorial Hall movement.

The late Mr Whyte was twice married; he leaves a wife [née Minna Elizabeth Ibbotson] and one son [Louis Melville Whyte] to mourn his loss.
