Death of Mr Charles T. Metcalfe
The death occurred yesterday of Mr Charles T. Metcalfe, one of the best-known
shipping and insurance brokers in the State. Mr Metcalfe was playing tennis with a friend at North Sydney on Sunday afternoon, when he suddenly collapsed. Medical attention was immediately summoned, but, without regaining consciousness, he passed away at 11 o’clock yesterday morning.
The late Mr Metcalfe was born in Sydney 59 years ago. He received his early education at the private school of Reverend John Pendrill at Glebe Point. From there he proceeded to Oxford and commenced to study for the bar. The illness of his father caused his return to Australia, and he shortly afterwards entered his father’s business of M. Metcalfe and Co., well-known insurance and shipping brokers.
Then he accepted the position of joint manager of the South British Insurance Company, and after serving a period of three years with the company entered into partnership with Messrs Banks Bros. In addition to his connection with Banks Bros. and Metcalfe, the late Mr Metcalfe was prominent in the shipping and commercial world. He was managing director of the Illawarra and South Coast S.N. Company, director of the Federal Coke Company Ltd., director of Sandemans, Ltd., director of Paris House Ltd., and up to a year ago a director of the Royal Exchange.
Mr. Metcalfe leaves a wife and three daughters.
