A businessman by profession, Georg Wantzelis had Czech origins, but was born in Germany. At one point his father, Otto, was consul in San Thomas in the Virgin Islands. In later life George Wantzelius moved to Ciudad Bolívar, the capital of the Bolívar state in south-east Venezuela, where he lived for many years, although he also travelled widely for business reasons.
