About

Harold W. Gandon was an all-round sportsman who lived on the Continent for most of his adult life, notably in Vienna where in 1894 he helped found the Vienna Cricket and Football Club. He was also a member and captain of that club’s football team during its first match in 1895 as well as being an original member of the Austrian Football Union, founded in 1900.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Gandon moved to Belgium where he continued to play football and was a committee member of the cricket section of Beerschot Athletic Club (1900-1902) in Antwerp and a member of the tennis committee of the Royal Beerschot Tennis and Hockey Club in the same city.

Gandon later lived in his native England again for some time until returning to Belgium circa 1922. He was subsequently technical director of the Antwerpse Gazmaatschappij, a gas company with head offices in Antwerp. An engineer by profession, he had previously (1894-1900) worked as a manager of the Vienna branch of the Imperial Continental Gas Association in the Austrian capital.

After spending the years circa 1940-46 back in England, Gandon returned to Antwerp where he died in January 1955 at the age of 81.
