About

Sydney L. Fry was the fourth of the seven children born to Thomas Fry and Esther Maria Fry (née Clarkson). Thomas Fry ran a furniture dealership, Messrs Fry & Co., from premises located at 40 O’Connell Street (officially known as Sackville Street until 1924) in Dublin city centre. Thomas Fry was also Treasurer for the National Association for the Freedom of Worship, which wanted to abolish pew rental.

Sydney L. Fry was the Dublin manager for the London and Lancashire Insurance Company. In addition to playing lawn tennis, he was also a gifted swimmer and in 1889 saved a drowning boy from the Liffey, the river that divides Dublin into two halves. At one point Sydney L. Fry was also Secretary for the East of Ireland Championships lawn tennis tournament, a grass court meeting first held in Howth, Dublin, in July 1885.

Sydney L. Fry married Emilie Mabel Sampson, a native of Lancashire, England, on 3 June 1903 in West Kirby, Cheshire. They had two children together, sons Cyril Lawrence Fry and Edward Fry. From 1920 until his death in December 1935 at the age of 64, Sydney L. Fry lived with his family at Herbert Hill, a large house located in the south Dublin suburb of Dundrum.
