About

Friedrich von Rohrer was born on 14 May 1895 in Brno, the second of the five children – two sons and three daughters – of Rudolf Maria Eduard von Rohrer, a member of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy and a printer and publisher, and Magarethe Maria Augusta Rohrer (née Krackhardt). Both of Friedrich’s parents were also from Brno.

On 16 January 1917, in Brno, Friedrich von Rohrer married Margarete Maria Magdalena Leopoldine Stöger-Steiner von Steinstätten (b. 1893), who was also from an aristocratic family and who also took part in lawn tennis tournaments. Grete von Rohrer, as she was popularly known, was also a storyteller and women’s rights activist. She inherited the Rohrer publishing company after the death of Friedrich von Rohrer in Brno on 26 April 1945 at the age of 49.

After the end of the Second World War, Grete von Rohrer moved the Rohrer publishing company to Austria, where she lived for the rest of her life. She died in Baden, Austria, on 27 February 1969 at the age of 75.

Both Friedrich and Grete von Rohrer were members of the Brno Lawn Tennis Club. Friedrich von Rohrer was also involved with the German Lawn Tennis Association. In 1924, von Rohrer took part in the men’s singles and, with Ernst Gottlieb, the men’s doubles events at the Olympic Games in Paris, but did not finish among the medals.

In some Czech sources Friedrich von Rohrer is listed as Bedřich Rohrer, while some German sources list his name as Friedrich Röhrer.
