On the same day the semi-finals of the National Championships were staged, the fate of the best german tennis player was revealed to the world public:
Just a few days after he and Henner Henkel had returned from their world tour which had led them to the USA,Japan and Australia,Gottfried von Cramm was arrested by the Gestapo on March 5 at Castle Brüggen, one of his family`s residences. After spending the next two months in the infamous Prinz-Albrecht-Palais in Berlin, the headquarters of the Gestapo, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment for sexual offenses on May 14.He was released on probation on October 16.
Der Tennissport had mentioned him for the last time in its 5th issue, dated 2.III.1938.In the following issues no one dared to print his name until his conviction was reported in the 11th issue dated 20.V.1938,the same issue which dealt with the National Championships in Braunschweig.
