From the "Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1889): "Nearly two months of the present lawn tennis season had passed away before it was announced for certain that the tournament at Leamington would not fall through, as had been generally believed. It would indeed have been a pity to have allowed an old-established fixture like this to be abandoned, more especially as fair entries had always been obtained, and the challenge cup had been only in the possession of the present holder, Mr James Dwight, for one year.
" Luckily, the Town Improvement Association took the tournament in hand, and being backed up by a very strong committee, assisted by Mr Blaker and Mr Downing as honorary secretaries, everything proceeded well for a successful meeting. A programme of three level event and four handicaps was arranged, and these all received a capital entry, not only in numbers, but also in quality..."
