"The first real Sussex Championships tournament was held in September 1889; real in the sense that it attracted a good entry and would have a fixed place in the calendar, growing in popularity in the following years when it began to rival the South of England Championships tournament, held down the coast in Eastbourne. A Challenge Cup was offered at the 1889 Sussex Championships. A Challenge Round would thus be in force in the two main singles events until the early 1900s.
