About

The Honourable Patrick Bowes-Lyon was born in March 1863, the fifth child of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Frances Dora Bowes-Lyon (née Smith). Their first five children were all boys, and they would be followed by two more boys and four girls, bringing the total to eleven. The first child, also called Claude, would become the 14th and 1st Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne on the death of his father in 1904 and, with his wife, the former Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck, would have ten children, six sons and four daughters.

The ninth child and fourth and final daughter of Claude and France Bowes-Lyon, Lady Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, would later marry Albert Frederick Arthur George, Duke of York, the future King George VI. They would become the parents of Queen Elizabeth II and the maternal grandparents of King Charles III. The lawn tennis player Patrick Bowes-Lyon was thus a paternal uncle of Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), wife of King George VI, and a paternal great-uncle of Queen Elizabeth II.

Patrick Bowes-Lyon studied law at Cambridge University, being called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1886 and later practising as a barrister. In 1887, he notably won the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon together with Herbert Wilberforce. In the final match they defeated James Herbert Crispe and Edward Barratt-Smith by the score of 7-5 6-3 6-2. The following year the titleholders were defeated in five sets in the challenge round by the Renshaw twins, Ernest and William.

On 9 August 1893, Patrick Bowes-Lyon married Alice Wiltshire (1858-1953) in the village of Stretton-on-Fosse, Warwickshire. They had four children together, two sons and two daughters. Patrick Bowes-Lyon served with the British Army during World War One, rising to the rank of major in the Essex Regiment. He also acted as Justice of the Peace for Kent and Deputy Lieutenant for Forfar. He died in October 1946 in the town of Westerham in Kent; he was 83 years old.
