From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1887): "We have this year to chronicle a new departure in connection with the Scottish Championship Tournament. Hitherto the Edinburgh Lawn Tennis Company were its sole sponsors; but, having taken counsel, they have now joined forces with those of the Edinburgh University Club, and, as a natural consequence of that strength which unity is said to impart, the ninth annual meeting has been conceived and carried out on a more extensive scale than had ever previously been attempted north of the border. Prior to the current year of grace, the [men's singles] championship and gentlemen's doubles alone constituted the programme, but on the present occasion these competitions were augmented by [an]other seven, including a couple of consolations. [...]
"Instead of only one champion cup as heretofore, four were now offered. The Edinburgh Lawn Tennis Company, of course, continued their one for the gentlemen's singles, and one of their members, Mr Graham Murray, added another for the double championship, which, although an annual contest, has never had a trophy associated with it. Following this worthy lead, the University Club, to make a pair, provided a similar cup, and furnished the fourth for the ladies' singles championship, the honour of instituting which, therefore, rests with them. These cups, supplied by Marshall and Sons of Edinburgh, are each of the value of 27 guineas, splendid specimens of the silversmith's art, and, along with the other prizes, were greatly admired. [...]
