“A championship competition in this popular pastime was commenced at Prince’s Ground, Hans Place, yesterday. The attendance was large.”

From the “Times”, Friday 3 ??? July 1880
“The final round in the Championship Cup at Prince’s was not played in the most favourable circumstances yesterday afternoon. The drenching rain which commenced early in the morning continued with but slight intervals almost up to the time arranged to commence. On account of the wretched state of the turf, play did not commence until a quarter to five. There was a large attendance of spectators, and throughout the whole time excitement prevailed, as the advantage was very slight on either side. The first two sets were particularly close and five-all was scored in each, which necessitated an advantage game being played. The last set also proved a very tough affair. At five-all an advantage game ensued, which was followed by deuce, however. Mr Lawford in the next took advantage, and won by eight games to six, which proclaimed him the holder of the cup by three sets to two.
“In the first set Mr Lawford was the first to score, and after two to Mr Lubbock, each took a single. Mr Lubbock won the set by seven games to five. Mr Lawford again scored first in the second set, then Mr Lubbock one, Mr Lawford two, Mr Lubbock three, Mr Lawford two, and Mr Lubbock three, Mr Lubbock again winning by seven games to five. The third set also opened in Mr Lawford’s favour, followed by Mr Lubbock one, Mr Lawford a single, Mr Lubbock a pair, and concluded with four to Mr Lawford, who won by six games to three.
“At this stage a remarkable change occurred in Mr Lubbock’s play. Mr Lawford was evidently on his mettle, but his rival’s defence was anything but careful. Throughout the set Mr Lubbock did not score a single game, and it fell to Mr Lawford by six games to love – the last being a love game. The concluding set brought out better play, and the first three games were taken by Mr Lubbock. Mr Lawford then won five right off, Mr Lubbock the two following, succeeded by a single to each. Mr Lawford then took advantage, and by the concluding game won the set by eight games to six and the match by three sets to two.”"
