Note: Ernest Renshaw/Lottie Dod owed half 15 throughout the mixed doubles event, which was otherwise open.

Two exhibition matches were played on Monday, August 13, 1888 on the Exmouth Ground, just after the end of the tournament.

From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1888): "During the progress of the open tournament during the present week several attempts were made to arrange two matches, one beween Mr Ernest Renshaw and Miss Lottie Dod, the champion giving 30 to the lady champion, and the other a ladies' and gentlemen's double - Mr Ernest Renshaw and Miss Lottie Dod against Mr Ernest Lewis and Mrs Blanche Hillayrd. The players all being at liberty on the Monday following the tournament Major Bridge and the committee kindly allowed the matches to played off on their ground.

"Although it was impossible to give much notice, it soon got bruited about that the 'crack' players were going to contest some matches, and the attendance at the Exmouth Ground was an extremely good one. Indeed, over £15.00 was taken at the gate, and this amount was handed over to the Exmouth Dispensary, a local charity.

"Miss Dod commenced playing a very strong game against Mr Renshaw, and won the opening set, only losing two games. The champion did better in the second set, and the score was called five games to two in his favour, but Miss Dod, by some fine play, took the next three games, and so caused an advantage set to be played. She also stood at 40 to 15 in the eleventh game, but Mr Renshaw won that and also the twelfth without losing an ace, and so won the set by seven games to five.

"The third set was well contested all through, two, three, four and five games all being called. In the eleventh game the score was called 40 to love, Miss Dod wins, but then Mr Renshaw made five aces consecutively, and also won the next game after it had been twice at deuce, this giving him the set and match. [Final score 2-6, 7-5, 7-5]

"In the double match Mr Renshaw and Miss Dod secured five games out of the first six, but the next three in succession were all taken by Mrs Hillyard, who, however, lost the tenth and so the set by six games to four. Deuce was called in six games out of the ten, showing that the set was well contested.

"After one and two games all had been called in the second set, Mr Renshaw and Miss Dod took three in succession, this bringing the score to five games to two in their favour. A love game - the only one of the match - followed to Mr Lewis and Mrs Hillyard, and that pair also won the next three games, all at deuce, the score then standing at advantage game to them. The twelfth, after being once at deuce, was gained by Mr Renshaw and Miss Dod, and they followed this up by also taking the next two, thus winning the set by eight games to six, and the match by two sets to love." [Final score: 6-4, 8-6]
